This is a treatise by Michael Corris, known as a conceptual artist, designer, and art historian, that examines the works of Ad Reinhardt (1913-1969), a charismatic painter representing post-war America, from a wide range of perspectives.
From 1956 until his death in 1969, Ad Reinhardt, like a Zen monk, quietly continued to paint only square black paintings. His "Black Paintings," the culmination of his abstract expression, are actually composed of evenly divided nine-part color fields with subtle tonal differences, using the darkest tones of colors such as green, blue, and brown. The boundaries of each color field can be identified not by color, but by a slight sheen with an extremely delicate expression, which is like a mysterious light rising from the deep black darkness. This "purity" seen in Reinhardt's work was also a practice of his philosophical and spiritual exploration, which was connected to Eastern thought, but it eliminated romantic gestures and dramatic elements from painting, declaring a break from popular mass art and high art. This purity, standing out from the world of nothingness, reflects ideas that were not in the context of Western art until then, and shines with a unique brilliance. This book is a meticulously detailed reading of Reinhardt's aesthetics and philosophy, who stubbornly pursued "art for art's sake," and his works from a multifaceted historical perspective.
